In the process of recovery from addiction or other complex mental health challenges, it helps to speak to others who have navigated a similar path and understand what you are going through. Check out these accessible peer-led community resources that may suit your needs.

  • On Our Own

    On Our Own is a Peer Support Recovery Center for folks in Charlottesville and the surrounding counties dealing with mental health challenges. On Our Own operates on the premise that anyone can get well and stay well, and people do recover! On Our Own is a non-profit organization offering free groups and walk-in peer support 6 days a week. The On Our Own house provides a recovery-oriented community full of hope and support.

  • Partner for Mental Health

    Partner for Mental Health provides information & referral and ongoing intensive navigation, advocacy, and service coordination for people with complex mental health and substance use challenges who are referred from Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail or the Therapeutic Docket. All services for eligible participants are free of charge.

  • Mental Health America: Virgina (MHAV) Warmline

    The MHAV Warmline is a free peer-run support service for individuals who want someone to talk to or have specific questions about their recovery journey. The peers who answer the phone provide personal examples of wellness, recovery, and hope. Call 1-866-400-MHAV (6428) Monday through Friday 9 AM to 9 PM, or on weekends and holidays 5 PM – 9 PM. Text/chat support is available 5 PM-9 PM, Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday.

  • NAMI Blue Ridge Charlottesville

    NAMI provides free support groups for family members of individuals with mental health challenges. NAMI also provides educational programs, including a speaker series and the “In Our Own Voice” presentations where individuals with mental health challenges share their powerful personal stories.

  • PFLAG Blue Ridge

    PFLAG offers a free support group that focuses on the needs of transgender people and their partners, parents, children, loved ones, friends, and allies. PFLAG also offers a free support group specifically for transgender people of color.

  • Virginia Veteran and Family Support

    The Virginia Department of Veterans Services (DVS) connects Virginia’s veterans and their families to federal and state benefits, support, quality care, and recognition they have earned. Their Veteran and Family Support unit provides outreach, connection, and support to veterans and their families as they address the challenges of military service, transition, deployments, post-traumatic stress or other behavioral health concerns as well as traumatic brain injuries and physical injuries.
